Instructions for Authors

SCANNING provides an international and interdisciplinary medium for the rapid exchange of information among all scientists interested in scanning electron, scanning probe, and scanning optical microscopies. Areas of specific interest include all aspects of the instrumentation associated with scanning microscopies; correlative microscopy techniques; stereometry; stereology; analytic techniques and novel applications of the microscopies.

Manuscripts should be typewritten on one side of each sheet only on bond paper and double-spaced in all sections including the summary, references, and legends to illustrations and tables. One original and two review copies of the manuscript should be submitted. Papers must be accompanied by a computer disc. Preferred file formats include Microsoft Word and Corel Wordperfect, but many other word processing formats can be converted. If none of these programs is available, save manuscript as "text only," an option available on all word processing programs.

The following information should be given on the title page:

  1. Title of paper (not more than 100 characters)
  2. Short running title (about 50 characters)
  3. Author(s) name(s) including initials
  4. Department(s) and institution(s) at which work was done
  5. The full name and address including zip code of the author to whom all the correspondence, proofs, and requests for reprints should be addressed
  6. Acknowledgment of receipt of grants which supported the work. Pages should be numbered consecutively in the upper right hand corner
  7. A list of up to five key words to be used for indexing purposes.
  8. Appropriate PACS classification numbers. See Editor's Note Concerning the Use of PACS Codes. (Complete list is available at ftp://aps.org/pub/pacs/pacs_99.asc)

The layout of articles submitted as Short Notes or as Practical Hints and Tips will be optional.

The layout of Review Papers will be as agreed in discussion between authors and editors.

The layout of Original Papers should follow the guideline below:

SCANNING Layout Summary

Authors are encouraged to provide selective and informative bibliographic reviews. The list of references should follow this section.

Materials and Methods should list the sources, grades, and names of suppliers of all materials used, with their addresses given in a form which would allow any reader to contact the author's sources of supply directly. Likewise, authors should give the names of manufacturers of commercially available instruments which they have used. In the event that novel prototype or homemade equipment has been used, adequate details of manufacture should be given including the qualities or specifications of material used and the required engineering tolerances. Formulae should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals in round brackets.

Tables should be typed on separate pages, clearly spaced and numbered in sequence with Roman numerals. Their position in the manuscript should be indicated clearly in the relevant margin.

Halftone figures and line diagrams should be glossy prints of the size intended to appear in the journal, preferably either column width or page width. Two copies should be submitted for each figure or line diagram. Several illustrations may be mounted together as a plate. Colour illustrations will be accepted. The charge to authors is $120 U.S. per image. Stereoscopic pair illustrations should have each half 65mm wide and these must be mounted in the correct orientation for stereoscopic viewing. The top of each illustration should be clearly marked by labelling the rear of the photograph in soft pencil. In addition, two spare copies of half-tone illustrations should be submitted, of a quality suitable for submission to reviewers. Labelling should be incorporated at a suitable scale using not less than 1.5 mm high letters or numbers. Illustrations should be numbered in sequence as Figures 1, 2, 3, etc. and reference in the text should be to Figure 1, 2, 3, etc. (within parentheses use Fig. 1, etc.). Position in the manuscript should be clearly indicated in the relevant margin and a list of legends to the figures should be provided on a separate sheet or sheets. Micron markers, magnification markers at the edge of a micrograph, should be removed before submission as publishable illustrations. The magnification of each figure should be indicated in the legend to the figure by a statement that the "horizontal field width = x µm". The figure should be adequately protected for transmission by post. Authors are advised not to use paper clips or staples. Figures will not be returned by the journal. If images are acquired digitally: for review purposes, authors can submit dye sublimation, inkjet, or laser prints (600 - 1200 dpi). Upon acceptance of the manuscript, digital images can be sent via CD-R, FTP, or e-mail. Digital images should be in TIFF format. For satisfactory reproduction, images to be reproduced at the standard size (one column wide) should be 750 –1,000 pixels wide with 500 pixels as a minimum. Authors may call the editorial office with any questions.

Units: Units, quantities and formulae should be expressed according to the recommendation of the Système International (SI-units), for example the unit nm should be used instead of A and Pa (Pascal) or mbar instead of Torr.

Abbreviations: Keep abbreviations to a minimum. Define each abbreviation on its first use. Please do not invent new abbreviations but use those which are standard in SCANNING.

Manuscripts should be sent to the following address:
